The Marc Chagall Museum, being the house where the artist was born and spent his youth is the most visited museum in the city. It’s one of the main tourist attractions in the city.
His modest house is on Pokrovskaya Street, not far from the Railway Station. It features a brick one-story construction, built in the early years of the 20th century, near the barracks of non-combatant troops. At first, two wooden wings and a shop adjoined to the main structure.
In 1991 the one-story brick structure received the title of Museum of Vitebsk. The entire exhibition took one of the rooms, and in another part of Marc Chagall House ordinary residents of Vitebsk lived.
In 1998, there were archaeological excavations in the courtyard of the Marc Chagall Museum. Samples of china and ceramic ware of that time were found. A lamp, donated by Henrich Mendel to the museum and authentic kitchenware belonging to the Chagalls are the best exhibits.

It’s difficult to say when the construction of this church started. Some sources link its erection with the name of Prince Olgerd in the 14th century. Others claim that the Annunciation Church appeared in the Lower Castle in the city on the order of Princess Olga in the 10th century.

By studying the nature of the development and materials used in the construction, researchers concluded that the Annunciation Church wasn’t by Belorussian masters but by Balkan architects brought in by the princes of Polotsk.
The fact is that there appears a unique masonry for a Belorussian temple: hewed limestone blocks alternate with layers of flat bricks. Thanks to this the church gets its unique look, not only among the many churches in Vitebsk but even in Belarus.

In 1772, Vitebsk became part of Russia, rendering the Magdeburg right obsolete. Yet, the City Hall continued to serve the city’s needs.
