The Great Church Debrecen
The Great Church Debrecen

The Reformed Great Church (also known as the Great Reformed Church) in Debrecen stands as an iconic symbol of Protestantism. A church already existed on this site during the Middle Ages, but it was destroyed by fire. The Gothic St. Andrew Church replaced it between 1297 and 1311.

In 1628, Protestant citizens rebuilt the St. Andrew Church, and a tower with a large bell was added. Heavy damages occurred during the 1707 freedom fight led by Francis II Rákóczi. Tragically, the church burned down again during a great fire in 1802.

Construction and Architecture

The Great Church was built between 1805 and 1824 in the neoclassical style. Designed by Mihály Péchy, the original plan featured a cross-shaped ground plan and a large dome, but financial constraints led to modifications.

The western tower was completed by 1818, and the eastern tower by 1821. Both towers stand 61 meters high. Its facade was slightly modified in 1823/24 to address its appearance. The interior features white-painted walls, and the main nave accommodates around 5000 people. It houses two organs, including a new electronic organ with resonance pipes.
