While archaeological research confirmed that the first settlement was here before 400 B.C., the first written information about Jastarnia dates back to 1378. Before World War II, this town was one of the most popular resorts in Poland.
Increased number of visitors
It welcomed 800 visitors during the summer of 1923. Construction of the railway line in 1922 started the transformation from a village to a town, along with the building of a fishing port in 1926-1928. Granted a town charter in 1972, Jastarnia is one of the most well-known holiday towns in Poland.
Compared to other Baltic Sea resorts, Jastarnia is a large watering place. It has shops, pubs, and bars, ready to spoil you for choice. The town has preserved its special character suggestive of the pre-war fishing village it once was.
With its romantic narrow streets in the center, fishermen wading through the waters of the Bay of Puck, and the vast sandy beach separated from the town by a belt of dunes, Jastarnia has what it takes to be among Poland’s most popular coastal holiday resorts.
Jastarnia is most famous for its sandy beach and dunes studded with pine trees. Some of these dunes are as much as nine meters tall. Near the beach are two 19th-century red-brick one-story buildings, once the base for the local lifeguards. Worth visiting is also the church, built in 1931, where by reading the tablet at the main gate you can learn the names of the patron saints important for the town.
The Bay of Puck
While walking along the Bay of Puck you can visit the large fishing port of Jastarnia. Here yellow fishing smacks are the main attraction. In the bar in Jastarnia, a stone’s throw away from the port, you can taste Pomeranian beer, try fresh fried fish, and listen to locals talking in Kashubian. Hel Peninsula
The town of Jastarnia is in the Voivodship of Pomerania, on the 35-km-long sandbar of the Hel Peninsula. Its population is 4,000 inhabitants, with the townsfolk ranking among the highest earners in Poland. Jastarnia is the kind of town that knows how to shape and market its image.

The Jastarnia Lighthouse, also known as “Latarnia Morska Jastarnia,” stands proudly on the Polish coast of the Baltic Sea. This maritime beacon has a rich history and plays a crucial role in ensuring safe navigation for ships and sailors.
The Lighthouse is situated at 54°42′00.9″N latitude and 18°40′53.9″E longitude. It graces the Hel Peninsula, a narrow strip of land that separates the open sea from the Bay of Puck.
The first lighthouse was erected here in 1938, but it met a tragic fate during World War II. In 1950, a new lighthouse replaced it, standing tall at 17 meters (56 feet) in height.

The cylindrical tower features a balcony and lantern. Its distinctive appearance includes white and red bands on the tower and a red lantern. The Lighthouse emits a recurring light pattern: 2 seconds of light followed by 2 seconds of darkness, then 7 seconds of light and 9 seconds of darkness, with a complete cycle lasting 20 seconds.
The light source sits at an elevation of 22 meters (72 feet) above sea level. Its luminous glow reaches up to 15 nautical miles (approximately 28 kilometers or 17 miles).

History and Purpose
In 1936, as tensions escalated, the Polish authorities established the Rejon Umocniony Hel (Hel Fortified Area) to safeguard the peninsula from potential land-based attacks. Jastarnia, strategically positioned on the northern edge of the peninsula, became the chosen location for a key resistance point. Construction began in 1939, just before the outbreak of World War II.
The Bunkers
- Saragossa: A heavy combat bunker designed for machine guns, its walls range from 100 to 180 cm thick. The armored dome, with 180 mm-thick plating, could withstand a direct hit from a 220 mm-caliber projectile. Two machine guns were positioned—one in the armored dome (covering a 190° frontal sector) and another for oblique fire along a nearby dirt road.
- Sęp: Another formidable combat bunker, Sęp protected machine gun crews. Its design allowed coordinated fire support with neighboring bunkers.
- Sokół: Although lighter than the others, Sokół played a crucial role. It served as an observation post and housed essential facilities for the crew.
- Sabała: This bunker, like Sokół, was lighter but still vital. It contributed to the overall defense strategy.
Preserving History
Since 2005, the site has operated as the Skansen Fortyfikacji (Fortifications Open-Air Museum). Restored according to the 1939 plans, the bunkers now form an educational trail, inviting visitors to explore their wartime significance.
