The Storno House, located on the Main Square, is a captivating Baroque corner house. Its history dates back to the 15th century when it belonged to the Haberleiter family. Notably, King Matthias found accommodation here in 1482–83 during his assault on Vienna.

In the 18th century, the Festetics family took ownership, giving the building its final form. The house features a closed, round, two-story corner balcony adorned with rich ornamentation, a basket-arched gate displaying the Festetics family coat of arms, and unique pelican-motif door knockers.

The Storno Family and Collection

The Storno family, originally from Tessin Province in Switzerland, purchased the house in 1872. Ferenc Storno, a talented picture restorer, settled in Sopron in 1845. His sons, Ferenc and Kálmán, continued the family tradition while pursuing art studies.

Ferenc Storno’s efforts led to the renowned Storno Collection, housed on the second floor. The collection includes valuable furniture, weaponry, china, and glass art, providing a glimpse into late 19th-century interior design.

The Goat Church, located in the heart of Sopron’s historic center, dates back to the 13th century. Initially built by Franciscan monks, it underwent reconstruction in the 14th and 15th centuries.

The church tower, adorned with the Geissel family coat of arms, gives rise to its peculiar name. Legend attributes the church’s construction to a goat that discovered hidden treasure, but in reality, it’s linked to a historical murder case involving the Geissel family.

Historical Significance

Throughout its history, the Goat Church played various roles. In the 16th and 17th centuries, five parliament meetings took place within its walls. Ferdinand III and two Hungarian queens were crowned here, while families like the Esterházys, Széchényis, and Meskós chose it as their burial site.

Unique Features

János Kapisztrán allegedly preached here in 1455, urging believers to fight the Ottoman Turks. Unique ornamentation on the consoles and keystones distinguishes this part of the church within Hungarian Gothic architecture.

After a fire in 1676, the church underwent Baroque reconstruction. The Benedictines later took ownership and carried out further renovations.
