Ski Resorts in Latvia
Latvia is a very popular tourist destination, especially for those individuals who are looking for a great winter skiing holiday or vacation experience. The ski season in Latvia starts in December and concludes in April.
Currently, there are 19 different ski resorts in Latvia, all of which offer great cross-country skiing opportunities. Because the counrty lacks in speed slopes the opportunities for downhill skiing are few. However, there is sufficient terrain to accommodate anyone that loves to ski, whether a beginner or an advanced skier. Moreover, most ski resorts in Latvia offer nice accommodations and ski tutelage.
Of the 19 ski resorts currently operating, we have selected the three that we feel are the best winter tourist destinations in Latvia.
Baili – located 107 km (66.5 miles) north of Riga, Latvia’s capital, is the Baili ski resort. It offers 4 different slopes to enjoy and 7 lifts for ascending them. There is also a 3 km (2 mile) cross-country track that was recently renovated. Additionally, Baili offers accommodation, a café, and a skiing and snowboarding school to take advantage of when you are vacationing here.
Sigulda – this is Latvia’s premier downhill and cross-country skiing resort. This resort features international competitions for both skiing and snowboarding. The major attraction of Sigulda is the bobsled and toboggan runs. For great entertainment after you are done with the slopes for the day, visit the city of Sigulda and its castle.
Zagarkalns – this ski resorts has 14 different runs including a sled-only run, snowboarding trails, and a snow park for children. There are 11 lifts to take advantage of as well as a skiing and snowboarding school for adults and children. The resort also features numerous cross-country trails.
